5 Tips for Teaching Kids to Brush

It’s a common theme during a dental visit with your children, a predictable admonition to start teaching your kids the fundamentals of brushing early.  Mounting evidence has demonstrated that good oral hygiene is the key to overall good health, and that makes getting off to a good beginning with care is important. We know that sometimes even adults need a refresher on how to brush their teeth properly, so Pasadena Children’s Dentistry had this helpful guide put together to aid parents in instructing their children on how to brush properly, and to ensure it continues successfully.

Your Kids And Tooth Care: Proper Brushing Techniques

While it all looks pretty straightforward on the surface, there are actually some techniques you can use to ensure you get the best possible results from brushing.  There’s more to it than putting toothpaste on a brush and then applying it to your teeth vigorously! Kids especially tend to have difficulty sticking with brushing long enough to do it properly, and without years of experience lack the necessary know-how to get it done correctly.  The following steps can be taken to help resolve these concerns:

Ensuring Your Kids Brush Properly:

  • Brush With Them – This is the simplest technique to ensure they spend sufficient time on their teeth, just brush your teeth with them!  As you spend the proper time and use the correct methods to tend to oral care, your children will mimic and do the same.  Time with the kids and good dental hygiene!
  • Involve Them In The Process – Obviously they’re going to be brushing their own teeth, but did you take them out and let them pick their own toothbrushes and select a toothpaste they enjoy?  Themes and characters popular with children are often available to help make your kids more enthusiastic about brushing.
  • Get A Timer – Set a timer to gauge proper brushing duration using an egg timer, your phone, or even a song that your children like that happens to be the right length.  This makes knowing when you’re done easier, and the song option can make it fun to brush as well!
  • Floss, Floss, Floss – Flossing is important for children as well as adults, but handling the string floss can be difficult for children.  Thankfully they make small devices that make flossing easier and are available in appropriate children sizes.
  • Make It A Habit – Brushing your teeth with your children at the same time every day will help to establish a routine that will keep them, and you, on track with oral hygiene.
